Ancient Novgorod (The Saviour Nereditsa)

White walls and small domes climb a grassy ridge over the river plain, the subject of Ancient Novgorod (The Saviour Nereditsa), Nicholas Roerich study of an early Russian hilltop church. Chalk-white masonry takes the afternoon glare, drum walls warmed to bone at the edges, helmet domes gone dull pewter against a high, cold sky. Below, the meadow runs in flat bands of viridian and ochre, and the matte tempera handling keeps every stroke dry, close to fresco. It settles into a study or a library corner, anywhere with room for a low horizon, a hilltop sanctuary, and the long quiet of the northern sky.
