Ancient Landscape

Grass covered barrows swell along a ridge above a slow river bend, land shaped by forgotten hands and set down by Nicholas Roerich in Ancient landscape. Violet shadow pools in each hollow while the mound crests hold dry ochre light. The paint sits matte, tempera thin, brushed in long flat strokes that leave the earth feeling packed and old. Far off, a thread of smoke marks where someone once settled. A quiet study or a hallway with low evening light suits it well, where the deep colors read calmly against plain plaster and pale stone.
