An Italianate Landscape

Cypress trees stand dark against a hazy slope, and a stone farmhouse settles into the hillside below. This is An Italianate Landscape by Vilhelms Purvitis, the Latvian painter far from home and painting southern light. Warm ochre fields dominate the middle distance, crossed by pale paths that curve toward a ridge of blue-violet hills. The brushwork is loose and wet, dragging thin paint over sunbaked ground, while the sky above stays a washed, milky gold. Shadows pool coldly under the trees, giving the heat something to press against.
