An Abandoned Farm

A shuttered farmhouse slumps at the edge of its field, roofline askew, gate swinging loose. Louis Valtat paints An Abandoned Farm with the loose, loaded brush of the Fauves, turning neglect into pure color. Thick strokes of ochre and rusted sienna build the crumbling walls, while greens laid on wet into wet swallow the overgrown yard. The sky burns in a hard chrome yellow, pressing the whole scene into that particular heat of late summer when a farm gives itself back to the weeds. Fauvist color does the mourning here, not sentiment. Hang it where quiet rooms want company: a study desk, a stairwell landing, a reading nook with a worn armchair.
