Amsterdam

Grey canal water fills the lower half of the sheet, drawn in long ruled strokes that catch the light like ripples on real water. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva titled the work simply Amsterdam. Gabled brick houses step back from the embankment, their stepped crowns and window mullions built up in layered crosshatching. The woodcut grain shows through every tone, so shadows read as ink-black bars while sky and water stay open paper. Boats moor along the quay, masts cutting thin verticals against the pale Dutch sky. A study, hallway, or reading nook with cool northern light suits this city view well.
