Figures climb the slopes of the Kalvarienberg above Bozen, small against the wide mountain light. Am Kalvarienberg Bei Bozen gathers Albin Egger-Lienz procession of cross-bearers into one solemn alpine ascent. Egger-Lienz builds the scene from broad planes of earth brown, slate grey, and faded sky blue, the figures rendered heavy and angular in the Tyrolean manner. Bare trees, wayside shrines, and bowed heads register in muted ochre; the crosses rise dark against the ridge line. A study or stairwell with stone or dark timber gains gravity from a scene like this, where the mountain air feels cold and the climb looks long.
