Alone

Thick lithographic crayon work sits heavy on the paper surface, every stroke of Alone (Elles) visible as waxy texture and pressed grain. A lone woman turns from a dressing table, her back to us, hair loose against lamplight. Toulouse-Lautrec built the Elles series from nights in Paris houses of ill repute, drawing the women between customers. Here the brothel empties out. Hatched shadows pool in corners, the wash of ochre and olive dims, and her silhouette carries all the weight of the sheet. Solitude rendered in grease and stone. Suited to a bedroom reading corner or a quiet hallway where a single lamp does the lighting.
