Allegro (Sonata of the Serpent)

A coiling road winds up a dark mountain like a serpent lifting its body toward the sun. This is Allegro, the opening movement of Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis Sonata of the Serpent. The path twists in tight S curves through shadowed rock, spires and pine shapes crowding its edges. Above, a crowned sun pours pale gold over the summit, while the lower slopes sink into deep blue and slate green. Small towers perch along the ridge like notes on a stave, the whole scene read as music made visible. Hang it in a study or stairwell where its vertical climb can unfold.
