Allegro (Sonata of the Sea)

Waves build in stacked bands, each crest trimmed with lacework foam. Allegro, opening movement of the Sonata of the Sea by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, sets twin suns and small sailboats into that swelling blue. Cobalt deepens toward the bottom, then lifts through teal and pale green to the horizon, where two gold discs glow like coins. Masts rise from the troughs with pennants flying, and gulls cross as small dark strokes. The foam reads almost engraved, curl after curl, until the water seems scored for orchestra. A stairwell or coastal sitting room suits it best, pale walls letting the deep color carry the space.
