Alexander Palace in Detskoye Selo

The long yellow facade of the Alexander Palace stretches across the sheet, its neoclassical colonnade rendered in fine pen lines and pale washes. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva gives the imperial residence at Detskoye Selo her characteristic graphic discipline, every window and pilaster drawn with architectural precision. Look closely and the tonal work carries the scene: soft greys pool beneath the cornice, crosshatching darkens the shadowed portico, and the lawn in front stays almost blank, letting the building hold its weight. Sky and ground sit quiet while the palace reads crisp and pale, a study in restraint from a master of the St Petersburg woodcut tradition. Suited to a hallway or a reading room where orderly composition and muted tone set the register.
