Alder against the sun

Backlit alder branches scrawl black calligraphy over a blazing sky in this Pyotr Konchalovsky landscape. Every twig reads as drawn line, every leaf cluster a dab of fire. The painter loads the oil paint in thick, directional strokes, a habit from his Jack of Diamonds years. Where the sun breaks through, foliage turns to spun copper and sap green; the trunk keeps a deep umber shadow at its base, and low bank grasses catch the same heat. It belongs in a study or dim hallway, where the painted glare burns hardest and its dark silhouette anchors quieter surroundings.
