Akt 1935

A nude figure rests against a darkened interior, one arm folded behind her head while warm light falls across the shoulder. Akt 1935 shows the Hungarian painter Vaszary János at his most direct. The body is built from broad strokes of rose ochre and cool ivory, paint laid on so thickly that each contour carries a visible ridge. Behind her, teal and umber shadows flatten into one deep ground, letting the lit flesh carry the whole composition. Hung in a bedroom or a dim reading room, she reads almost by lamplight, amber tones deepening against slate walls and plain linen.
