Cliff faces carved into cave sanctuaries rise above a gorge in Ajanta. The Rock Temples by Nicholas Roerich sets that excavated architecture against the dark volcanic basalt of the Deccan ravine. Roerich temples the rock in tiers of somber violet and warm sienna, cut openings reading like doorways to painted halls within. Thin pathways cling to the stone, and the gorge below cools into teal shadow. His paint lies in broad, dry strokes, the kind that mimic weathered masonry and hot wind-worn surface. A study or library with stone or dark wood benefits from its depth of shade and quiet grandeur.
