After the Rain

Puddles hold the sky after a storm has moved on, and Granville Redmond paints the moment with a wet brush and a patient eye. After the Rain belongs to that quiet register of California landscape where weather, not drama, is the subject. Sodden grass turns olive and umber along the foreground, each blade thickened with impasto where rain has bent it flat. Above, clouds part in slabs of pearl and pewter, and a low sun pushes a band of rose gold across the wet ground. Distant oaks stand dark against the clearing light, their silhouettes soft at the edges. A reading nook or a hallway with north light suits this mood well, calm and rinsed clean.
