Abstract Speed: The Car has Passed

A vortex of red and green curves spins outward, the wake of an automobile rendered as pure motion. Giacomo Balla called the picture Abstract Speed: The Car has Passed. Cobalt and white bands sweep beneath the red, cut by zigzag strokes that read like tire tracks dissolving into air. Futurist lines of force bend every painted form toward a dark spiral center, where velocity alone becomes the subject. Hung in a hallway or above a desk, its spinning arcs pull the eye across a room and give an entryway the momentum of open road.
