Abramtsevo Oaks

Ancient oaks rule the grounds at Abramtsevo, their massive trunks planted in the meadow like columns of living wood. Pyotr Konchalovsky painted these patriarchs with the weight they deserve. Furrowed bark runs in deep ridges of umber and grey, each groove built up in loaded strokes. The crowns burst overhead in masses of sap green and olive, sunlight filtering through to scatter gold across the grass below. Every limb twists with age. A study lined with books, a hallway of dark panelling, a reading nook beside a tall window: the estate woodland comes indoors.
