Abramtsevo. Oak Grove

Broad oaks shoulder a grassy slope at Abramtsevo, their trunks painted with the blunt confidence Pyotr Konchalovsky brought to Russian landscape. Oak Grove names the estate woodland and shows it in full summer leaf. Thick oil paint builds each trunk in ochre and umber, ridges standing off the surface like real bark. Overhead the canopy knots into deep greens, sap green against near-black shade, while sunlight breaks across the grass in pale lemon dashes. Brushwork stays loose and muscular throughout. At home in a reading room lined with books, a stairway landing, or a study that wants the shade and hush of an old country summer.
