Above the Trees

Treetops take over the whole surface in Emily Carr, Above the Trees, the canopy seen from a height few painters bother to climb. Nothing below is visible. The forest has swallowed its own base. Carr works the crowns in thick, directional strokes, fir green dragged over darker underpainting so each spire carries its own shadow. Pale sky shows through gaps at the upper edge, a cold blue grey against near-black boughs. The brushwork leans and sways, matching the wind that shaped these trees in life. Hang it where height matters: a stairwell landing, a tall hallway, or above a reading chair that faces the window.
