Arum lilies rise through the picture plane in Bart van der Leck Aaronskelken, their white hoods and dark spadices reduced to flat, deliberate shapes. De Stijl logic governs every contour. The blooms read almost as symbols, flowers stripped to geometry. Strongs outlines divide the leaves into planes of green and black, each field of color fitting the next like inlay work. Background bands anchor the composition in primary tones, the palette the Dutch modernists made their own. Any trace of painterly softness has been planed away. This hangs naturally in a study or a hallway with clean white walls, where its crisp geometry can hold the room.
