A Window

A window stands half open in the composition, its frame cutting the sheet into pale geometry. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva builds the scene around that opening, letting daylight do the heavy work. Crosshatched shadow gathers along the sill and inner reveals, while the panes read as near-white paper left untouched. The wood grain, the mullion joints, the soft bloom of light on the wall beside it, all rendered in the disciplined graphic touch she brought from her woodcut training. Petersburg light, thin and even, fills the interior. Hang it in a hallway or a dim reading corner, where the image of borrowed daylight does its quiet work on the room.
