A Vase of Pink Roses

Pink roses crowd a glass vase until the blooms lean outward, petals barely holding their shape. Samuel Peploe painted them exactly at that tipping point. Nothing stiff, nothing arranged for show. Look at the brushwork in the petals: rose madder dragged wet over pale pink, a single white highlight flicked onto one bloom at the rim. The vase itself is a dark vertical, almost black, and it anchors a table that tilts toward the viewer in that deliberate, slightly flattened space Peploe loved. Behind, cool grey-blue keeps the pinks at full temperature. A drawing room corner, a dressing table, a quiet hallway table. Anywhere that wants a burst of garden color without fuss.
