A Vallon Landscape

A narrow valley folds into itself under a pale sky, the slopes rendered in bands of green and umber. Felix Vallotton built this landscape from flat, deliberate planes of oil color, each field of the hillside edged with a darker contour line that keeps the terrain firm and graphic. Light falls evenly, so the vallon reads almost like a stage set, quiet and slightly unreal. It suits a study, hallway, or reading corner where a calm, ordered view earns a long look.
