A Tree in the Garden

A single tree fills the canvas, its foliage built from dabs of viridian, emerald and lemon yellow that seem to tremble in summer heat. Valtat paints it with the heavy impasto of Fauvist colour, every leaf a separate stroke of loaded brush. Behind the trunk, garden beds flare red and violet, and patches of raw ground show through in ochre and dusty pink. The shadows are not grey but blue and mauve, laid on thick enough to catch the light along the ridges of paint. Strong colour like this belongs in a bright hallway or above a reading chair, where the garden keeps giving even in winter.
