A tranquil river landscape

Water holds the middle of the canvas, broad and unhurried, catching a pale sky on its surface. Louis Aston Knight builds his tranquil river landscape around that slow current and the banks that cradle it. Greens carry most of the weight here, mossy along the reeds, silvery where willows thin out at the waterline. A low boathouse sits half in shadow, its weathered timber reflected in broken patches. Light flickers across the ripples in short impasto strokes, and the far bank dissolves into soft violet haze. A reading nook or lakeside study suits this mood well, anywhere quiet water belongs on the walls.
