Two figures bend toward a table in soft sepia shadow, their faces half lost in tonal haze. A Study in Gum belongs to Clarence White, the American pictorialist photographer whose prints traded crisp detail for atmosphere. Everything here is built from tonal range rather than line: warm browns pooling into deep umber, highlights brushed to a pale ivory, edges dissolving the way a gum bichromate print bleeds pigment into paper. The grain of the process is part of the image, each tone laid down in layers like washes on damp stock.
