Tall gabled houses lean over a cobbled lane in A Street Scene from Riga, drawn by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. The Baltic capital appears in his unmistakable hand, part memory, part architectural record. Grey ink and wash set the tone. Steep roofs climb in tight crosshatching, shop signs hang at odd angles, and tiny figures drift through the middle distance like ghosts of merchants and clerks. A church spire pierces the pale sky at the end of the street, anchoring the whole receding perspective.
