Storm clouds bank low above the rooftops and palm lines of Cannes. In A Storm over Cannes, Winston Churchill turns his brush on the Riviera at the moment weather arrives, the sky doing most of the talking. Greys deepen toward slate at the cloud base while a last band of light still warms the sea and the pale facades below. The brushwork moves fast and loaded, oil dragged in broad diagonals across the heavens, the town rendered in smaller, patient strokes.
