A Still Life of Roses

Roses fill the foreground, packed into a shallow bowl that tips slightly toward the viewer. Samuel Peploe paints A Still Life of Roses with petals in carmine, shell pink and bruised cream, each bloom built from short, loaded brushstrokes rather than blended washes. Leaves cut through in viridian and dark teal, holding the pinks against a pale ground. The table edge drops away in one flat band of blue grey, a colourist decision that pushes every flower forward. Light falls from the left, warming the nearest petals and cooling the rest. It suits a sunroom, a dressing table corner, any bright room that wants a quiet burst of colour.
