A Rocky Shore, Iona

Cold Atlantic shallows run green over dark ledges of rock at the edge of Iona in A Rocky Shore, a coastal composition from Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe. Oil sits thick on the surface, the headland reduced to clean planes of grey mauve and rose beneath a thin wash of sky. Foam breaks in loaded white strokes along the tideline, and the water deepens from milky aquamarine to strong cobalt where the seabed falls away. Hang it where light moves, a stairwell or study with pale wood and plain plaster, and the cool greens do the rest.
