A House in Kaunas

A narrow timber house in Kaunas leans into the street, its gabled facade drawn with the tenderness Mstislav Dobuzhinsky reserved for provincial towns. The composition names itself plainly: a house, a threshold, a corner of Lithuania held still. Look closer and the drawing does its quiet work. Tight crosshatching builds the clapboard siding plank by plank, while softer washes let the sky dissolve around the roofline. A lit window, a crooked fence, a chimney against pale grey: details Dobuzhinsky gathered like a diarist. The ink lines carry that faint sepia warmth of old paper. Hung in a hallway or reading nook, the house keeps its small, watchful presence wherever it settles.
