A Good Tree Has Grown

A single tree fills the picture plane, its canopy broad and generous against a pale sky. Nicholas Roerich titled the work A good tree has grown, and the title reads plainly in the image itself. The trunk rises in deep umber, rooted firmly at the base of the composition. Foliage spreads in layered washes of green and blue, the pigment thin in places so the ground tone breathes through. Roerichs tempera method shows in the matte, chalky surface, every leaf cluster built from flat planes rather than detail. A quiet parable in tree form, suited to a study or a reading nook where one pause is worth an hour.
