A Field of California Poppies

Poppies burn across the whole hillside, unbroken from foreground to the blue haze at the ridge. A Field of California Poppies is Redmond at his most generous with color. Orange petals carry a smear of red at the base, each bloom set down with a loaded brush that leaves the pigment standing slightly proud of the surface. Between the flowers, dry grass reads as olive and straw, and the gaps of bare earth give the orange somewhere to breathe. Above the slope, low coastal light flattens into a pale sky. A sunroom or garden-facing living room gives this field the daylight it wants.
