Half timbering and a steep slate roof rise from the water meadows in A Cottage in the Risle Valley, Normandy, a landscape by Louis Aston Knight. Reflections do half the work here. The house doubles itself in the slow river below, poplars lean in green-grey masses, and warm light slides across the plaster between dark beams. Knight built these Normandy scenes from layered brushwork, mossy greens broken by touches of rose and cream, the water surface given over to short horizontal strokes that tremble at the bank. Suited to a study, a hallway, or above a reading chair where landscape calms a busy wall.
