Collapsed arches and sun-split masonry of a palace in Balaklava fill the composition, rendered by Trush Ivan Ivanovych. The ruins of the palace at Balaklava are the whole subject here, nothing held back. Broken stone walls rise in warm ochre and dusty rose, their edges crumbled where centuries of salt air have eaten the mortar away. Dark apertures of doorways and windows open onto shadowed interiors, while scrub grass and pale wildflowers thread through the rubble at the base. The sky above carries a soft, chalky light, and the brushwork in the masonry is thick and deliberate, each block given its own weight and tilt. A study, a library reading corner, or a hallway with stone or wood tones would give these Crimean ruins the quiet company they deserve.
