Leaf-strewn ground and thinning birches carry the title Унылая Пора Очей Очарованье, drawn from Pushkin and painted by Vitold Byalynitsky-Birulya as a meditation on late autumn. Ochre and rusted copper dominate the canopy. Grey sky presses low over fields already emptied for winter. Look at the brushwork in the foliage: short, loaded strokes of umber and dull gold, broken here and there by a bare trunk in cool violet shadow. The ground reads almost wet, fallen leaves churned into mud along a faint cart track. Suited to a study or reading room, where autumn melancholy earns its keep.
