A wooden gazebo sits beneath trees already shedding gold. Vitold Byalynitsky-Birulya painted this autumn scene in 1905, when Russian estate gardens were turning bare and quiet. Birches and maples crowd around the small pavilion, their leaves rust and copper against a pale sky. Fallen foliage drifts across the lawn, and the lattice of the gazebo catches slanting afternoon light. Soft oil handling gives the grass a cool green undertone. Made for a reading nook or a study shelf corner, where the hush of an October afternoon belongs.
