Melting snow pulls back from a brown field. Vitold Byalynitsky-Birulya titled the picture simply Март, and the title says everything: the first thaw, painted by a hand that knew Russian winters down to the mud. Bare birches stand in thin black lines against a sky already turning blue at the top of the canvas. Water lies in shallow pools where the frost has let go, catching pale light in silver streaks. A warm haze sits low over the treeline, the oil laid in soft, wet strokes that read as actual dampness. The ground itself is mottled ochre and dirty white, no prettiness, only honesty. Hang it in a hallway or a home office where a north-facing window suits the cool, early light of the scene.
