Быстрая Речка (Swift River)

Fast water owns the view: a shallow stream driven between low banks, white where it grinds over gravel, slow and mirror dark in the bends. Быстрая Речка, the swift river, keeps that promise. Byalynitsky-Birulya drags silver and grey green across the flow in broad horizontal strokes, breaking the surface with short dabs of white at each riffle. Ochre mud at the margins, cool violet in the wet sand, one birch swung over the shallows, and a pale sky doubling in the slack pools. A study with a north window suits it, or a stairwell landing where that cold clarity reads fresh at any hour; the current never quite settles.
