Start With the Wall, Not the Art

Measure the wall in inches, width and height, and write both numbers down. Note anything that interrupts the space, such as a light switch, a radiator, a window frame or a doorway. An empty wall of 90 by 50 inches behaves very differently from one of the same size with a thermostat in the corner. The interruptions, not the wall, usually decide the largest size you can use.

The standard rule is that art should fill about two thirds to three quarters of the wall's width when hung alone. Room size sets the ceiling on what works. The paper test costs nothing and settles the question faster than any rule of thumb. It also reveals sightline problems, such as a print that blocks a hallway view or sits behind a lamp.

When the Size You Want Is Wrong

The honest answer is that the most common failure is not a print that is too large. It is a print that arrives and looks small, because the buyer measured the wall once and then guessed at proportions. A 16 by 20 inch print on a bare 8 foot wall will almost always disappoint, no matter how good the image is. Aspect ratio matters as much as area. A wide panoramic image suits a space above a bed or sofa, while a vertical format suits narrow walls between windows or doors.
