The Grey of Water
At arm's length the lake surface is a field of layered strokes rather than a flat wash. Cobalt and viridian sit over deeper ultramarine, each stroke left visible so the water seems to move without rippling. Terlemezian avoids highlight entirely. The lake reads as pale grey because the strokes are cool and close in value, which is why the picture never glares even in a bright room.
Shadow at the Hills
The ridgeline is built from a handful of tones, ochre catching faint light along the shore and violet pooling where the hills meet the water. There is no drawn contour. Form comes from temperature shifts, warm against cold, and the eye reads distance from those shifts alone. It is a lesson in how little information a landscape needs to feel complete.
Boats as Accent
The fishing boats in the middle distance are the only dark accents in the picture, a few hulls reduced to single marks. They give the lake its scale. Without them the water would be abstract. With them, the eye measures the distance to the far shore and the picture becomes a place. They are placed with care, spaced across the band of water like notes on a staff.

Highland Landscape After Paris
Landscape painting in the early twentieth century had moved past description. Painters across Europe were after weather, hour and temperature rather than topography, letting brushwork carry feeling. Terlemezian absorbed this while studying in Paris, where plein air practice and looser handling were reshaping what a landscape could be. He brought that freedom to a subject most European painters never touched, the Armenian plateau, its wide lakes and treeless ridges.
What holds attention here is restraint. The composition is nearly all horizontal, water and sky divided by a low band of hills, and the eye travels it slowly. The brushwork is visible but never fussy, short strokes laid side by side like weather moving. A picture this quiet does not compete with a room. It rewards the hundredth look as much as the first, which is the test a landscape must pass to live on a wall.
Sevan Holds Its Distance
The lake refuses to give itself away. No glare on the water, no detail in the ridgeline, no figure looking back at you. Terlemezian keeps everything at one remove, as if the view were remembered rather than seen. Small boats sit in the middle distance, reduced to dark marks. The palette stays cold, cobalt over ultramarine, violet shadow at the foot of the hills. What the picture offers instead of drama is atmosphere, the particular stillness of early evening on the Armenian highlands when the water and sky share one grey breath.
Terlemezian trained in Paris and carried what he learned there back to Armenian subjects, painting landscapes and portraits across a long career spent between Europe and the Caucasus. His landscapes avoid postcard sentiment. He paints the highlands the way a local sees them, familiar and slightly severe. Sevan sits in that mode, a real place rendered without embellishment, its mood doing the work that ornament does elsewhere.
Designing with Sevan
This is a piece for the hour when the light drops. It suits a study, a hallway, or the wall above a desk where you want calm rather than conversation. The broad horizontal sits naturally over a console table or sideboard, hung low enough that the water line runs near eye level. Keep the surrounding palette warm, walnut, brass, linen, ochre textiles, and let the cold blues do the cooling. The smaller size works in a passage or reading corner. At the larger sizes the lake takes on real breadth, wide enough to open a narrow room. One light source from the side, and the brushwork comes alive after dark.
