Chicago 6

Abstract Expressionism · Framed Poster

Chicago 6 reads a weathered wall as calligraphy. Peeling black paint against pale ground, tar streaks, cracked plaster. A photograph that behaves like a drawing and holds a quiet room.

What Chicago 6 Refuses to Show

The picture withholds its own subject. No skyline, no street, no human figure. Siskind photographed a wall in Chicago and gave the city nothing back except its skin. Flakes of black pigment curl away from pale ground like the strokes of an enormous brush. The camera sits close, flattens the surface, and lets gesture replace architecture. You are left with marks and the voids between them. That refusal is the point. The image asks for attention rather than recognition, and it gives back something a window never could, a surface that changes with the light in the room.

By the early 1950s Siskind had turned from documentary work toward abstraction, and Chicago 6 belongs to that turn. He was close to painters of the New York School, and his photographs shared their interest in gesture, all-over composition, and the found mark. Walls became his page. He worked the same themes across decades, in Rome, in Mexico, in New England, always reading decay as handwriting. This image sits at the centre of that practice, where photography stopped describing the world and started composing with it.

Photography Joins the New York School

Mid-century American abstraction wanted the mark to carry feeling without illustration. Painters built whole canvases from drips, strokes and fields. Siskind brought photography into that conversation by pointing the camera at surfaces that already carried marks of their own. A torn poster, a cracked wall, a smear of tar. Nothing was arranged and everything was chosen. His work argued that a photograph could be abstract without being dishonest, that the world offered ready-made compositions to anyone willing to look closely enough at what others walked past.

What keeps this image alive is its economy. Two values, dark and light, and a narrow band of greys between them. The composition fills the frame edge to edge with nothing to lean on, no horizon, no perspective. At arm's length you see grain, ridges of dried tar, the shadow under each lifted flake. From across the room it resolves into calligraphy. That double reading never wears out. It rewards the tenth year on a wall as much as the first evening, and it looks different at every hour.

“Decay, read slowly, turns out to be handwriting.”
Artistic Analysis

Gesture Found in a Wall

The Narrow Tonal Band

Siskind compressed the image into charcoal and chalk. Nothing in the middle goes muddy, nothing in the blacks goes dead. Up close you can trace how each flake of paint catches light on one edge and drops into shadow on the other. The restraint is the technique. Because the range stays narrow, the picture holds its intensity in dim rooms and never shouts in bright ones.

Light as the Author

The photograph was made by raking light across a flat surface. That angle turns physical texture into drawing. Every ridge of tar becomes a stroke, every crack a line with weight and direction. On your own wall, the same thing continues. Morning light from a side window will pick up the grain differently than evening lamplight, and the image will shift with the day without ever changing.

Composition Without a Centre

There is no focal point to rest on, and that is deliberate. The marks spread across the frame the way ink spreads across a page, dense in places, sparse in others. Your eye moves instead of arriving. This all-over structure is what lets the picture sit above furniture without competing with it. It behaves like a field, not a picture of something, and rooms absorb it easily.

Designing with Chicago 6

This is an evening piece. Its greys deepen as the light drops, so it earns its place in rooms used after dark, a study, a loft entryway, the wall behind a reading chair. Hang it against bare plaster, warm white, or a deep slate, and keep the furniture below it low and dark, a walnut console, a steel-frame bench, a plain oak sideboard. Centre it about 145 centimetres from the floor and give it room, because the composition needs air at the edges. The smaller size suits a hallway or a pair above a desk. At the largest, around a metre tall, it can anchor a whole wall on its own and needs nothing beside it. One light source from the side, and it does the rest.
