Zielona Brama, St Tropez

A green gate stands half open in St Tropez, its paint peeling over sun-bleached stone. Józef Pankiewicz painted this harbourside threshold with the loose, light-drunk touch of his southern period. Olive and viridian greens dominate the weathered door, set against a wall of warm cream and rose plaster. Broken brushwork lets the heat shimmer across the masonry, while deep shadow pools beneath the arch. The composition is intimate and cropped close, the kind of view a painter pauses for on a narrow street. Suited to a hallway, sunroom, or kitchen wall, where its greens and sunlit plaster bring Provençal warmth into an everyday room.
