Village on the Hill

Rooftops climb a steep green slope in Village on the hill, Gustave Loiseau gathering a French hamlet into stacked planes of terracotta, cream plaster and pale sky. Look closely and the crosshatching takes over: short en trelis strokes knit roof to meadow, dark tree lines stitch the ridge, and a sunlit road switchbacks upward between walled gardens. Greys cool the sky while the clay tiles hold their warmth. A stair landing, study or reading nook suits its quiet register; the cool greens and muted reds sit easily beside linen, oak and whitewashed plaster.
