Undergrowth

Dense foliage presses forward, every leaf a flat dark shape cut against light. Undergrowth by Felix Vallotton turns a forest floor into a study of pattern, where trunks rise as pale verticals through the tangle. Greens range from blackened emerald to acid yellow, laid in unbroken planes that meet at hard edges. Vallotton, the Swiss-born painter of Les Nabis, built the scene with an almost graphic clarity, letting shadow pools and sunlit gaps do the modeling. Brown underbrush knits the lower third together. A woodland interior like this suits a reading nook or a hallway that needs a cool, enveloping focal point.
