Tulipes Perroquet

Parrot tulips crowd a shallow vase, petals streaked with red and green in that feathery, split-toned way the flower gets its name. Felix Vallotton paints them bunched and slightly top-heavy, blooms nodding at odd angles against a plain ground. The blossoms carry deep carmine flushed into cream, edges frilled and ragged like torn silk, leaves in muted grey-green folding downward. Brushwork stays smooth and contained, the Nabi habit of flattening everything into quiet zones of color, so the bouquet reads almost cut-out, bold in shape rather than in detail. It belongs on a dining room wall or above a sideboard, somewhere a still life of flowers keeps company with meals and conversation.
