Trinity of the Mount

Three trees hold the crest of a bare hill, their crowns pressed into one dark mass against a pale sky. Trinity of the Mount distills the Swiss landscape to its barest arithmetic. Vallotton paints the slope in flat, unbroken planes, the grass a deep viridian with no single blade left visible. Shadows fall in clean geometric wedges from the left. Each trunk reads as one black stroke, and the sky sits above like a sheet of unmarked porcelain. A hallway with strong afternoon light suits it, or a quiet study where the stillness of that hill can slow an afternoon down.
