Trees in Bloom

Apple and pear trees in full flower crowd the foreground of Gustave Loiseau's Trees in Bloom, white blossom massed against a pale spring sky. Loiseau built his orchards out of short, deliberate brushstrokes, dabbing white and pink petals over branches still dark with winter. Trunks lean at odd angles, their bark rendered in strokes of violet and umber, while the meadow beneath carries a scatter of green shoots and fallen petals. In the distance a hedgerow softens into blue-grey haze, keeping the composition rooted in the Paris countryside. Blossom season lasts two weeks a year, which is why painters chased it. This one holds it permanently, and would sit naturally in a sunroom, dining room, or bedroom where soft light and gentle color are welcome.
