Trees by the River

Willows lean over slow water, their reflections breaking into dabs of moss green and river grey. Gustave Loiseau painted Trees by the River with the small, restless brushstrokes that made his landscapes breathe. Look closely and the trunks dissolve into crosshatched shadow while the current carries flecks of ochre and cool blue toward the bank. Loiseau en plein air touch gives every leaf a tremble, every ripple a direction, the way light actually moves along a French waterway at midday. Suited to a study or reading nook where quiet green and moving water set an unhurried tone.
