The Seine bends wide below Les Andelys, and Felix Vallotton caught that exact sweep of Normandy river country in To remember Andelys, a landscape held in memory as much as observed. Chalk bluffs rise pale above a scatter of red roofs, their shadows laid in flat, unbroken planes. Vallotton draws every poplar and chimney with a hard contour, letting bands of green field and slate water carry the whole view.
