The Rowan

A rowan tree stands in a northern meadow, its berries burning scarlet against a pale Finnish sky. Pekka Halonen painted The Rowan as a portrait of one tree, giving it the weight and presence usually reserved for figures. Look closely and the brushwork splits: leaves laid in with short olive and ochre strokes, berries built up in thick dots of red that catch the light like enamel. The trunk twists slightly, bark rendered in cool greys, while the background dissolves into soft greens and a hazy horizon. Halonen knew these forests from life, and it shows in every mark. Suits a study, hallway, or reading nook where a quiet northern landscape can hold the wall on its own.
